Fine dining, seafood, crêperies and bistros facing the ocean
From the haute cuisine of the grand hotels to unpretentious crêperies, La Baule has a rich and varied food scene. Seafood landed that morning, Guérande salt, Breton butter: local produce is at the heart of every plate. Here is our pick of the twelve best tables.
Our scores reflect our own experience and rest on several criteria: quality of ingredients, culinary creativity, service, setting and value for money. We visit every establishment anonymously and independently. These marks are subjective and updated regularly. Prices are indicative and may vary.
1 avenue Andreu, La Baule
We were won over by the tasting menu built around blue lobster and scallops from the bay. The view over the bay from the terrace adds something exceptional to the meal. Official website
Hermitage Barrière, La Baule
Feet in the sand, we ate a line-caught sea bass of faultless freshness. The relaxed-but-smart mood of the Hermitage makes this a summer lunch fixture. Official website
Le Royal Barrière, La Baule
On our last visit we had a roast turbot with seasonal vegetables judged remarkably well. The wine list, strong on Loire bottles, is worth the trip on its own. The panoramic view over the bay lifts every meal. Official website
14 avenue Pavie, La Baule
We go back every stay for the Pen Bron oysters and the royal platter, always generous and always fresh. The friendly terrace in season, where families and regulars mix, makes it a La Baule institution.
Place Notre-Dame, La Baule
The seasonal menu, rewritten with real invention, pleasantly surprised us: a sea bream tartare with citrus and Guérande salt stayed with us. The elegant setting of the Hôtel Saint-Christophe and the attentive service round out the plate nicely. Official website
Avenue du Général-de-Gaulle, La Baule
We loved the culinary journey chef Loïc sets out: Asian influences lifted by outstanding Breton produce. The intimate, warm room, ideal for dinner for two, and the careful plating both speak of genuine craft.
Town centre, La Baule
A genuine breath of fresh air on the local scene: we particularly liked the sushi cut to order from very fresh fish, and a pad thai reworked with coastal prawns. The clean, contemporary room sharpens the pleasure of discovery.
Town centre, La Baule
We were won over by the short menu, rewritten each week around the market. On the day we visited, an excellent onglet of beef with vegetables roasted in Guérande salt and a well-judged natural wine list did the job. Value for money is remarkable.
Rue du Maréchal Leclerc, La Baule
We fell for the generously filled buckwheat galette complète, then a salted-caramel crêpe for pudding: pure Breton happiness. The craft cider served in a bowl and the warm family atmosphere reminded us why this crêperie is a safe bet.
16 avenue des Ibis, La Baule
We liked the artistic bent of the plating and the invention of the market menu, which turns with the seasons. On our visit, a meagre ceviche with fresh herbs and a good wine list served us well. The terrace is pleasant in fine weather and worth booking ahead.
Seafront, La Baule
We had an excellent easy lunch facing the sea: tasty moules-frites and a fish of the day cooked exactly right. Quick, cheerful service and a panoramic terrace over the bay make this an ideal stop for a good meal without ceremony.
Seafront, La Baule
We enjoyed the singular mood of this beach restaurant: feet in the sand, tropical cocktail in hand, working through assorted tapas and grilled fish with exotic seasoning. Lounge music in the evening makes for a festive, easy-going atmosphere.
